As 2019 draws to a close, I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who played a part in breathing life into the HFX Wanderers Football Club. What started as a dream over 3 years ago became a reality on May 4th when our club played its first professional match at the revitalized Wanderers Grounds in front of a wet, cold and exuberant sold-out crowd.
Launching a professional sports team has been a lifelong dream and while the season was not without its ups and downs, as I reflect on what WE achieved, it was truly remarkable. WE now have a downtown community stadium where 6,000+ people come together to sing and cheer in unison in support of our own team. WE now have breathed new life into an iconic community asset at the Wanderers grounds, welcoming over 100,000 citizens through its gates. WE now have a team representing Halifax from coast to coast in a National league. WE now have given young Maritime soccer players a glimpse of what could be possible if they keep pursuing their dreams. WE now have contributed to a more vibrant, diverse, youthful and engaged downtown, helping to make our rapidly growing city a more desirable place to call home. WE now have made our community stronger through the power of sport.
I am grateful for all those who make up the WE because it has truly taken a village to get us to where we are today. To the leaders at the Canadian Premier League who have shepherded the growth of our thriving league. To our partners at Soccer Nova Scotia who welcomed our emergence with open arms. To our partners at the City of Halifax who always worked with us vs against us and maintained a world class grass pitch in challenging conditions. To our many corporate partners who believed in our vision when it was only on paper. To our coaches and players who took a chance on a new league and in many cases, a new city and gave it their all. To our staff who have worked tirelessly to push themselves and our business to great heights…and finally to our fans, the best fans in the country, who brought passion, energy and respect to the Wanderers Grounds every single game. Together WE have all created a new community that has become the beating heart of Halifax.
I know this off-season has been surprising to some, as we’ve said goodbye to a number of players who played with great passion for our club and connected with our fans and our community. While this is part of professional sports, it is never easy, and it is our sincere hope that our club never faces such a significant rebuild again. Our focus for 2020 has been on adding young, competitive players that combine speed, skill and character and I believe, we have been successful. The promise I make to our fans is that every move our club has made has been guided by a singular commitment to building you an explosive and entertaining championship contender that plays the game beautifully, as that is what you deserve.
I sincerely thank you for your passionate support of our club and look forward to continuing this ride with all of you in 2020.
Happy New Year
