‘Limitless passing range’: Wanderers sign French midfielder Lorenzo Callegari

The Halifax Wanderers have signed French midfielder Lorenzo Callegari to a contract for the 2023 Canadian Premier League season with a club option for 2024.

Callegari, 24, is a product of global powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and a former France youth international. He comes to Halifax after most recently playing for French club FC Chambly.

“We’re happy to welcome Lorenzo to Halifax and delighted he chose to take the next steps in his career with us,” sporting director Matt Fegan said. “In our discussions, he has been thorough in his assessment of everything we’re doing in Halifax. He has shown a great appetite to contribute to our project, and he will add some experience and forward-playing creativity to the base of our midfield.”

A holding midfielder, Callegari played in PSG’s academy from 2011 to 2018 and made his debut for the first team in 2016. Callegari started and played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 victory for PSG over Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup. Other players on the pitch in that match include Ángel Di María, Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva. He also made 43 appearances for PSG B during his time in Paris.

“Lorenzo is an experienced yet young player in the prime of his career that has played at a high level and is coming to us at the perfect time,” Wanderers head coach Patrice Gheisar said. “His technical capability will adjust well to the CPL and bring us a new perspective with his limitless passing range.”

Following his time with PSG, Callegari signed with Italian Serie A side Genoa before a move back to France with US Avranches. In 2020, he joined FC Chambly and made 30 appearances for the club between Ligue 2 and the Championnat National.

“I can’t wait to come to Halifax to meet the other players and the supporters that I know always come out and support the Wanderers,” Callegari said. “I’ve never been before, but I can’t wait to discover Canada; I’ve only heard good things! The club has kept important players from last season, so I think there will be a good atmosphere within the team.”

From Meudon, France, Callegari has represented France at the youth level from U17 to U20, making a combined 18 appearances. He was a part of the French side that won the 2015 U17 European Championship and competed at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile.
