Stories of the Match: Wanderers draw at home to Cavalry

The Halifax Wanderers nearly came away with three points, but a late goal by Cavalry FC had both teams walking away with one in a 2-2 draw.

Here are some of the storylines that transpired for the club over the 90 minutes.

Wanderers man of the Match: Samuel Salter

Sam Salter was a man on a mission Sunday.

The Wanderers forward found the back of the net for the second straight time at The Wanderer Grounds in 2022, another calm finish as he put the ball through the legs of Cavalry goalkeeper Marco Carducci.

Salter finished the match with three shots on target, four coming from inside the box. He also led his team with three chances created during the match—his header at the back post set up Akeem Garcia’s goal for Halifax.

JGL leads a dominant middle three

After a night off on Tuesday against Guelph, Jeremy Gagnon-Laparé returned to the starting eleven in a big way on Sunday.

Supported by Andre Rampersad and Aidan Daniels, Gagnon-Laparé led his team by winning nine duels and winning back possession in the final third four times.

On the opposite side of the ball, the veteran midfielder made 21 passes in the final third and three crosses over 90 minutes.

Garcia Stays in form

Fresh off a perfectly placed penalty on Tuesday against Guelph, Akeem Garcia found the back of the net again on Sunday.

The Wanderers striker followed up on a loose ball in the box to even the score at a goal each.

Garcia has scored in three of his last four matches, including a goal in both Wanderers’ home matches this season.

And Introducing… The Tiny Football Car

Rather than the referee, Sunday’s game ball was delivered by the Volkswagon Tiny Football Car, a remote control vehicle that rose to stardom at last summer’s European Championships.

It’s a 1:5 scale model of the ID.4, CPL founding partner Volkswagen’s first all-electric compact SUV. Powered by remote control, He can reach up to 90 kilometres per hour.

The Tiny Football Car will be making stops at CPL stadiums this season.

What they had to say

“I thought the team played well. The entire game came down to set plays, and all four goals were from set plays. Our pre-game discussion was about trying to limit the set pieces. It wasn’t to be, but we need to continue being difficult at home,” – Wanderers head coach Stephen Hart.

“The fans were amazing as always, and I think we try to move on and get results in the next two games,” – Wanderers forward Sam Salter.

What’s next?

The Wanderers continue a four-match homestand (three in CPL) when they welcome Forge FC to the Wanderers Grounds on Friday, May 20. Tickets are available now by clicking here.
