Q&A with Wanderers Captain Andre Rampersad

Andre Rampersad has been an important player for the Halifax Wanderers since the inaugural year in 2019. He worked hard after his first season to be voted as captain by his teammates and has since been a leader on and off the field for the club. A man of few words, Andre has an incredible work rate and determination to propel the club forward to succeed on the field, while bringing the community together through sport.

HFX Wanderers FC captain Andre Rampersad sat down with our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager Marvin Okello during Black History Month. Andre discusses the changes he would like to see in professional sports and football communities to help create a diverse, inclusive, equitable and accessible environment across the world.

Marvin Okello: How did you end up in Halifax, Andre?

Andre Rampersad: I was scouted by the coach of Halifax Wanderers FC.

What do you enjoy most about Wanderers matches?

AR: I enjoy walking onto the pitch and seeing the fans come out in large numbers to support us.

What would you like to see professional football teams and leagues do more of during Black History Month?

AR: I’d like to see a lot more education being promoted about black history across all the social media platforms, and more conversations on black history in order to educate those around us.

Have you learned a lot about diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility at the Wanderers?

AR: Yes I’ve learned a lot about these things at the wanderers because that’s what this club is all about, so there’s always conversations on these topics.

What is your favourite moment so far since you’ve been a part of the Wanderers family?

AR: My favourite moment has to be the first home game back in 2019, winning in front of the best fans and seeing my boy Akeem Garcia make history for the club.
